Welcome to the very first edition of The Misfits Route—where the vibe is open door, not velvet rope.
Because honestly? You can keep the glossy travel ads with the linen outfits and champagne flutes. We’re over here asking the real questions, like: “Cool… but where do I put the oxygen tank?” and “Will the power chair make it from the plane to the beach without a fight?”
At Misfits Highways & Skyways Travel Agency (MHSTA), we build trips around humanity over status. That means:
Accessibility isn’t a “feature.” It’s a human right.
The best moments aren’t always inside the 5-star bubble.
Rest is allowed. Actually—rest is the point.
And yes, our golden rule still stands: Nobody Gets Left Behind.
No One Left Behind: Accessibility Is About Human Rights (Not “Luxury”)
Let’s get real for a second. Travel gets marketed like it’s a reward for being effortless. But at Misfits HSways, we believe travel is a human thing. It’s about connection, perspective, and shared memories—full stop.
So when we talk about accessibility (power chairs, oxygen, senior assistance), we’re not talking about “nice add-ons.” We’re talking about whether a person can safely, comfortably, and respectfully exist in the experience.
Our founder, Sonny, built this agency on a grounded, bold philosophy: if you have a pulse and a dream, we will find a way to get you there. Whether you’re managing a power chair, traveling with a portable oxygen concentrator, or navigating the realities of senior mobility, your seat at the table is reserved.
I remember a family we worked with last year. Let’s call them the Millers. They hadn’t taken a vacation in seven years. Why? Because their youngest son uses a heavy power chair and requires a specific type of lift for transfers. Every time they looked at a cruise or a resort, the logistics felt like a mountain they couldn't climb. They were told "no" or "it’s complicated" so many times they just gave up.
When they found us at the MHSTA Hub, we didn't see a "complicated case." We saw a family that deserved a sunset. We spent weeks vetting hotels, talking to local transport providers about ramp widths, and ensuring the airline knew exactly how to handle that power chair.
And if a yacht is involved? The story isn’t the price tag. The story is this: the chair can get on it—so nobody is stuck on the dock while everyone else makes memories.
The photo they sent us from the beach: the look on that kid’s face when the salt spray hit him for the first time? That’s why we do this. That is the Misfit Route. It’s not about perfection; it’s about the grit, the planning, and the payoff.

Misfit-Style Travel Tips: Because “Standard” Wasn’t Built for Us
If you’re a misfit traveler, you know “winging it” can turn into “why are we crying in the hotel lobby.” So we plan with care, keep it simple, and leave room for real life.
1. The Pre-Flight Power-Up
If you’re traveling with mobility devices or medical electronics, your "Pre-Flight Power-Up" is your best friend.
Battery Check: Ensure all lithium batteries for power chairs or portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) are FAA-approved.
The 150% Rule: Always bring enough battery life for 150% of your flight time. If you have a 4-hour flight, have 6 hours of juice. Delays happen, and misfits stay prepared.
Documentation: Keep a physical folder with your equipment’s make, model, weight, and battery type. When an airline agent asks, you don’t want to be guessing.
2. The Magic of the Slow Pace
Modern travel culture tells us to see ten cities in ten days. To that, we say: No thanks.
The "Misfit Way" embraces the slow pace. When you’re traveling with special needs or seniors, the "Magic of the Slow Pace" allows you to actually enjoy where you are. Schedule a "Buffer Day" at the start of your trip to recover from the journey. Plan one "Big Event" per day, and leave the rest for wandering, napping, or people-watching. You aren’t "missing out": you’re actually experiencing more because you aren't exhausted.

3. Advocating Like a Misfit
There is a difference between being a "difficult customer" and being a "Misfit Advocate." Being a Misfit Advocate means knowing your rights and speaking up with a smile (and a firm backbone).
Call Ahead: Never assume "ADA Compliant" means the same thing to everyone. Call the hotel and ask for the width of the bathroom door. Ask if the "accessible" shower has a lip or if it’s a true roll-in.
The Squeaky Wheel gets the Ramp: If a service isn't meeting your needs, don't just suffer through it. Speak to the manager. Often, people want to help but just don't know what you need until you tell them.
4. Senior Assistance Hacks
Travel for our elders shouldn't be a marathon.
Request the Chair: Even if Grandpa can walk short distances, request airport wheelchair assistance. It saves his energy for the fun parts of the trip and gets you through security lines faster.
Ground Floor or Elevator Proximity: Always request rooms near the elevator. It’s a small detail that saves miles of walking over a week-long stay.
The Real Deal: Local Food + Culture Outside the 5-Star Bubble
We love comfort. We love a great bed and a smooth check-in. But the heart of a place? It usually isn’t hiding behind a “members only” sign.
The Real Deal is:
a tiny family-run restaurant where the menu is basically vibes and you trust the waiter,
a market snack you eat standing up because you couldn’t wait,
a neighborhood bakery that makes you forget what your email password is (a true blessing).
This isn’t about being “anti-luxury.” It’s about being pro-human. Pro-curiosity. Pro-actually meeting a place.
We design trips that balance what you need (accessibility, rest, safety, ease) with what you came for (culture, flavor, stories you’ll tell forever).
The Great Recovery: For Burnt-Out Pros Who Need a Communication Blackout
If you’re a nurse (or any kind of healthcare pro doing 12-hour shifts and holding the world together with caffeine and grit), you don’t need a “busy vacation.” You need a reset.
We call it The Great Recovery and the magic ingredient is a communication blackout.
Not forever. Not dramatic. Just enough time where nobody can reach you unless the building is literally on fire.
What that can look like:
Low-friction logistics: private transfers, pre-arranged plans, and fewer decisions.
Quiet-first stays: a calm resort wing, a villa with privacy, or anywhere that doesn’t come with a pool DJ at noon.
A gentle itinerary: one optional “anchor” activity, then naps, floating, reading, and healing.
Phone boundaries that actually work: Do Not Disturb, one daily check-in window, or handing your phone to your spouse like it’s a cursed object (we don’t judge).
Status is loud. Recovery is quiet. We’ll help you build the quiet.
Join the Crew (Open Door, Always)
This blog post is just the beginning. We’ve launched 'The Misfits Route' newsletter on Beehiiv to keep this conversation going. We'll be sharing accessible destination deep dives, gear reviews that actually matter, and stories from our fellow misfits out in the wild.
We want to build a community where no one feels like their medical needs, mobility limits, age, or burnout makes them “too much” to travel. You’re not too much. The system just wasn’t built with you in mind—and that’s exactly why we exist.
Ready to start planning your next adventure without the stress?
Check out our About Us page to meet the team.
Ready to jump in? Sign up for the Crew and let’s get moving.
Remember: the world is big, it’s beautiful, and it belongs to you just as much as anyone else. Don’t let the logistics bully you into staying home. We’ve got the maps, the experience, and the Nobody Gets Left Behind energy to make it happen.
See you on the route!
